Debris Waste Management Guide Project
In February 2023, the earthquakes centred in Kahramanmaraş generated approximately 200 million tonnes of debris waste across 13 provinces — recorded as the largest volume of rubble ever caused by a natural disaster worldwide. This major catastrophe revealed how strategic planning is essential for waste management and preparedness processes both before and after disasters.
About the Project
and with Akçansa and IC İçtaş İnşaat as main sponsors, Çimsa as supporting sponsor, and in-kind contributions from the Development and Investment Bank of Türkiye (TKYB), the project “Preparation of a Guide Document for the Management of Debris Waste Resulting from Urban Transformation, Earthquakes, and Possible Disasters” was implemented. This initiative marked an important step in post-disaster waste management planning.
Project Contribution
- Enhancing circularity in the construction sector,
- Ensuring the environmental and economic sustainability of disaster-related debris waste,
- Supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
